    please ask all the questions you can come up with. i am certain i've made mistakes but that is one of the great aspects of xiang qi: the detailed analysis.

    if red moves back, green can fend off the immediate danger by moving C1=4. Now green's general can flee to the his 6th file. Red general can't capture the cannon because of the rook.

    Sorry to keep asking questions. In example 1, you say, just before the end that Red had to move his general up to the third rank, otherwise Green could foil his plans. How so? Red mates with his soldier either moving forward or sideways.
